Re-purpose: Ancient cassette holder to art kit

We were looking for something special for my niece for her birthday. She loves to do craft projects, so I thought we'd give her some supplies. Since she had three younger siblings, a safe place to put the supplies would be a good idea!

We found this old cassette tape holder at the D.I. (Utah's version of Goodwill) for $2 and gave it a new life! It was in very good condition, so no repairs were needed.

I had planned to cover the inside, but it coordinated well with the fabric, so I left it as-is.

I cut my fabric so it was ever-so-slightly wider than the face of the case, planning to tuck the edges under the existing trim. (Sorry I didn't take pictures during construction). I wrapped the fabric around the case, securing it with clothes pins on the "lid" edge. It it important to do this step with the case closed so you have enough fabric to stretch the entire way. Next, I started at the handle end, cutting away parts for the handle and latch. It is very forgiving, since you're going to glue it all together. Don't be afraid! You can't tell where I had to patch a few places where there were gaps!

I put a thin layer of Mod Podge on the case, laid the fabric down, smoothed out bubbles with my hand, and then put another thin layer of Mod Podge on top. I used a hair clip (because it was in my craft supplies) to push the fabric under the trip around the edge. My fabric already had glitter on it, but you could spray a fine layer of glitter spray paint over the top.

I left it to dry over night and then we filled it with all sorts of fun, girly craft supplies.

To satisfy my urge to craft, I decided to try my hand at making earrings. There are so many fun materials to use and it is pretty fool proof.

Flowers

We've been having so much fun making flowers to go with Christmas gifts this year! I've put the links to the ones that I used tutorials for on my craft board on Pintrest. Some were happy accidents, so there isn't a how-to. The girls have been making these themselves for cousins & friends & Lydia has been designing some to give, since I won't let her use the glue.

Long, long ago I always resented those hideous porch lights! They blended into the light-colored brick & were so blah. Since we were going to move, I didn't want to bother with new lights, so I tried something else. I wiped them down with a baby wipe (very professional) and then carefully painted them by hand with some copper-colored craft paint. $1.49 at Wal-Mart, 10 cent foam brush from Michaels Craft long ago.

Can you tell a difference? From the sidewalk, the whole front looked so much better!

I painted the doorbell and the storm door handle to match- for good measure.

Rivalry week came way early this year! I usually wear red or U of U attire every day during the week they play BYU, which is usually toward the end of November. That lets me use my hoodies in the line up. It's a bit warm for that & I'm considerable smaller than I was last year during football season. Thus, new U of U attire was needed.

Being incredibly cheap, I didn't want to spend $20 for a tshirt.

Enter the clearance section at WalMart.

$3 shirt (white, since there were no red ones left) + iron-on letters from the craft department = instant team spirit. Go Utes!

New distraction

I have a lot to blog about, what with Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year's, return to Weight Watcher's (down 9.4 lbs since the week after Thanksgiving, FYI) a darling baby doing cute things, her sisters doing funny/smart/naughty things.

Alas, I have been too distracted with my giant bottle of Mod Podge. I am on a quest to see just how many surfaces I can cover with it & how many ways we can use it. I have been busy making hiding place books for friends (hollowing out the inside of a book to make a compartment to hide your chocolate from the kids), helping the kids make gratitude journals, and even re-purposing a cute little jar we got filled with candy from a neighbor. Maybe a picture or two will find its way here...

I am also working on clearing clutter & organizing my house one drawer/basket/cupboard at a time. After I got pregnant with Eliza, everything kind of went to pot. Time to get it together. I have been finding inspiration from many other blogs as I sit feeding my baby. Some of you are incredibly clever! I am wondering why I've never shopped the as-is section at Ikea, because that seems to be the happening place to find creative organization ideas!

My timing is off. My kids are all happily distracted because we are at Grandma's, but none of my pictures I was going to blog are here. Oh well. There's always tomorrow next week.
